During my 22 years as a security correspondent, I covered various operations in which gardaí and troops sealed off particular areas they were about to search.

Some called it 'a ring of steel', a phrase I didn't like and never used.

However, I must admit 'a ring of steel' would have been appropriate in describing the lockdown of Washington, DC, for the inauguration of Joe Biden as US president last week..
